WNBA Commissioner Delivers Message About Caitlin Clark

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has quickly become the most talked-about player of the young 2024 WNBA season. At just 22 years old, the talented sharpshooter has captivated fans and analysts alike with her performance on the court. However, her rising star status has also sparked significant debate and controversy.

A prominent discussion point has been whether Clark is being targeted with hard fouls by opponents. Fans and Fever General Manager Lin Dunn have suggested that Clark faces undue physicality from other players. In response to these claims, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert cited Clark’s recent standout performance in the Fever’s 85–83 victory over the Washington Mystics, where she scored 30 points. Engelbert emphasized that no allegations of targeting arose from that game, implying that perceptions may be skewed by selective scrutiny.

Earlier in the season, Fever coach Christie Sides revealed that the team has been submitting instances of uncalled hard fouls on Clark to the league office for review. Dunn supported this move on social media, urging the WNBA to address what he described as “unnecessary targeting actions.” Engelbert, however, maintains that the physicality Clark faces is consistent with the nature of the game, noting that the physicality is not unique to Clark but a common aspect across all matches.

Engelbert also shared that she has received thousands of emails from fans about Clark, illustrating the widespread interest and concern surrounding the former Iowa guard. She pointed out that while the attention on Clark is intense, the physicality observed is a standard part of the WNBA’s competitive play, characterized by its physical defense, pick-and-rolls, and strategic floor spacing.

As Clark and the Fever, currently holding a 3-10 record, prepare to host the Atlanta Dream (5-5) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the conversation about her treatment on the court and her impact on the league continues. The game promises to be another opportunity for Clark to demonstrate her skills and for fans to witness the ongoing evolution of this dynamic player.
