Lightning strike causes large fire at Wayne Co. oil facility

WAYNE COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – Its been a busy weekend for first responders and emergency management in Wayne County.

 

The Wayne County Emergency Management Agency said a round of storms on Friday were to blame for a significant fire.

 

EMA said lightning struck an oil production facility near U.S. 45 and County Farm Road Friday night.

 

Officials said a fast response from first responders protected the community from a potentially tragic event.

Multiple, multiple stations from the Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department, along with the sheriff’s department, Waynesboro Police Department, all responded extremely quickly,” said Wayne County EMA Public Information Officer Paul Keane.

 

“Comments that we’re hearing from people who are part of the companies that own the well out there, they were amazed at how quickly first responders arrived on the scene, contained the fire and kept it from getting to the well.”

 

In a Facebook post, the EMA also confirmed lightning struck another area nearby, causing a water outage for thousands of people.
