According to authorities, three teens who perished in an accident yesterday might have been racing other vehicles. A silver Vauxhall Corsa driven by 17-year-olds Jonathan Scott and Robert Tepper, together with two girls, were overtaking when it struck a VW Golf head-on. The teenagers and Lauren, Jonathan’s 16-year-old girlfriend, who was the only passenger in the backseat, passed tragically. Following the incident near Mexborough, South Yorkshire, last night, another sixteen-year-old girl, who has not been identified, was battling for her life in the hospital.
Suspected of causing death by reckless driving, two youths, ages 18 and 19, who were in other vehicles on the same stretch of road at the time of the collision, were taken into custody. On bond, they were set free.
The elderly man who was driving the golf cart sustained minor injuries. Sergeant Andy Noble stated last night that police were looking into possible racial incidents. “It is a terrible incident,” he continued. Steven Tepper, the 42-year-old father of Robert, stated yesterday that his son and close friend Jonathan “loved anything to do with wheels.” He said he knew Jonathan had been behind the wheel, with Robert in the passenger seat. “Robert was my best friend, I’ve lost my best mate,” he continued, fighting back tears.
Flowers were left at the collision site yesterday. A note said, “Jon, Rob, and Lauren. Gone, but never forgotten. Everyone will be missing you.
A different card said, “RIP Lauren. We shall always miss you. In our hearts forever. In Cheshire, two adolescent males lost their lives in a Boxing Day smash. Both William Sheppard and Will Paton, who were believed to be eighteen, perished on the A34 Handforth bypass close to Wilmslow. There were two more teenagers hurt in the vehicle.
