2 dead, 2 injured after SUV crashes in backyard in south Pueblo

Two people were killed after an SUV crashed through a guardrail on the south side of Pueblo, ending up in a residential backyard one block over.

According to a spokesperson with the police department, four people were navigating a curve on Pueblo Boulevard just after 2 a.m. Thursday when the driver lost control and went off the road. The vehicle landed behind a house on Taylor Lane. Both the driver and one of the passengers was killed, while the other two passengers were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

As of 6:40 a.m., police say they expect the scene to remain active for at least a couple more hours due to the extent of the crash. Officers are planning to fly drones once there is more daylight to help process the scene. Pueblo Boulevard was closed for several hours in both directions from O’Neal to Vinewood. As of 9:30 a.m., it has reopened.

The investigation is still in its early stages, but police believe drinking and driving, as well as speeding, are factors.

This is a developing story, and we will update as we learn more.
