Two Pennsylvania duck hunters and their dog were rescued from their sinking boat recently by Barnegat Police Lt. Jeff Ryan, police said.
On Dec. 12, Barnegat police responded to a 911 call from a distressed boater, who reported that his vessel was sinking near Sun Harbor Marina off Bay Avenue. When police arrived at the marina, patrol units were unable to locate the individuals from land.
Lt. Ryan, who was off-duty at the time, was able to find them, using his personal vessel, police said. The two men and their dog were in the freezing water after their boat had completely submerged. They were taken onboard Ryan’s vessel and transported back to the Barnegat public docks.
The men and dog were cold but otherwise unharmed, police said. The water temperature in the bay is about 45 degrees.
