News Now: 13 killed and over dozens injured in Philippine road crash

A collision between a passenger van and a dump truck carrying sand on Monday claimed the lives of at least 13 person and over dozens injured in the southern Philippines, according to local authorities.

On the second-largest island of Mindanao, Antipas municipality in North Cotabato province, a major road was the scene of the afternoon tragedy.

Firefighter Samuel Lumayon told AFP that 13 bodies had been found at the scene, but he cautioned that the number of fatalities would increase when more badly injured individuals were transported to the hospital. According to witnesses, the truck’s brakes seemed to malfunction prior to the collision, disaster official Mic Garfin told AFP.

According to Garfin, the impact of the collision may have caused the van to catch fire. In the Philippines, where drivers often break the law and cars are typically overloaded or badly maintained, fatal traffic accidents are prevalent.
