GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK (WLOS) —
Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) officials report one person is dead after losing control of his vehicle early Sunday morning.
A press release from GSMNP says rangers responded to a report of a crash on the Spur, a popular roadway that connectsPigeon Forge to Gatlinburg through GSMNP, at 3:06 a.m. on May 2.
Officials sayGian Montano Spagnolo, 25, of Venezuela,was traveling south on the Spur when he lost control of his 2008 Nissan sedan near Caney Creek Road.He veered off the roadway and collided into multiple trees, dying from his injuries. Officials say Spagnolo was pronounced dead on scene.
GSMNP saysSpagnolo was the only occupant of the vehicle and speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, includingPigeon Forge Fire Department, Pigeon Forge Police Department, Sevier County Ambulance and the Sevier County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Officials saySpagnolo was currently living and working in Sevier County, Tennessee.
