A young boy who was killed in a tragic crash Monday is being grieved by many who knew him in Santa Fe.
Isaiah Gonzales, 8, died in a crash that occurred in Las Vegas, N.M., on Monday, according to family friend Amber Prada.
He was a student at Salazar Elementary, a spokesman for Santa Fe Public School District confirmed Friday.
An online fundraiser Prada made for the boy’s parents had raised more than $20,000 as of Friday.
“If you knew Isaiah you knew he was the sweetest, most loving little boy,” Prada wrote. “He was silly and so thoughtful. He was a best friend to many, especially his dad and mom.”
Gonzales is survived by his parents, Darren Gonzales and Marcelina Romero, who live in Santa Fe.
Others shared their grief for Gonzales on social media, along with images of the boy playing in a flag football league and wearing boxing gloves in a gym.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic loss of one of our young players, Isaiah Gonzales,” the New Mexico Association of Recreational Sports wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday.
“NMARS Santa Fe NFL Flag football has tragically lost a young legend. We ask our community to come together to support his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
“On behalf of the league, we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the Gonzales and Romero families.”
Prada wrote the money raised from the fundraiser would cover funeral costs, medical bills and additional bills and living expenses so that Gonzales’ parents “can take the time they need to grieve their baby boy.”
Las Vegas police did not respond Friday to a request for information on the crash that killed Gonzales.
