Three killed in head-on crash on main Outer Banks highway, North Carolina troopers say

According to troopers, a head-on collision on the key road that links areas of the Outer Banks claimed three lives. According to 1st Sgt. S. D. Hurley of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred after a minivan drove into oncoming traffic on N.C. Highway 12, sending three more individuals to hospitals. At approximately 11 a.m. on June 12, troopers reported being called to the location. A photo of the backed-up traffic along the coast was uploaded online around half an hour later.

The N.C. Department of Transportation said on Facebook that Highway 12 was closed near the Pea Island Visitor Center due to a serious traffic accident, and later shared that the stretch had reopened but that traffic was expected to be slow. Troops reported that a Dodge Caravan was traveling south on the highway when the driver approached a curve and crossed the center line, slamming into a Chevrolet SUV that was traveling north, Hurley told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

The crash claimed the lives of two individuals: Carolyn Elmore, a 67-year-old Chevrolet driver from Bracey, Virginia, and Elizabeth Sadler, an 87-year-old passenger from Blackridge, Virginia. According to the Highway Patrol, Elijah Midgette, a 25-year-old Rodanthe resident who was operating the Dodge Caravan, was the third fatality. Hurley reported that three additional riders with Elmore were hurt and sent to local hospitals. The collision occurred in Dare County, roughly ten miles south of Nags Head, a well-liked vacation spot. Parts of the Outer Banks barrier islands are connected by the more than 140-mile N.C. 12 highway. Tourism has benefited from the highway, although the “encroaching sand and sea” have caused the state to.
