A wildland firefighter pilot has died in Montana after her plane crashed while scooping water from a nearby reservoir.

According to a joint statement from the Forest Service, the Idaho Department of Lands, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Turchetti was operating a “Fire Boss Air Tractor 802 (AT-802) under contract by the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) on loan to the fire in support of the Forest Service suppression efforts.” With assistance and collaboration from the Federal Aviation Administration, the United States Forest Service, and the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the crash. The jet will be cleared and subjected to additional examination at a separate location after investigators arrived at the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
