Truck Driver Sentenced to 22.5 Years for Fatal Crash Caused by TikTok Distraction

 

In a devastating case of distracted driving, Danny Glen Tiner, a 38-year-old truck driver from Arizona, has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for causing a fatal crash that killed five people ¹. The accident occurred on January 12, 2023, on Interstate 10 in Chandler, Arizona, when Tiner failed to stop his tractor-trailer in time, colliding with stopped traffic in a construction zone ².

 

Tiner was found to be actively using the TikTok app at the time of the crash, with digital forensic data revealing that he had swiped through at least four TikTok videos while driving, including seconds before the fatal collision ². The investigation also found that Tiner was speeding, traveling at 68 mph in a 55 mph zone ³.

 

The victims of the crash included Ryan Gooding, Andrew Standifird, Gilberto Franco, Willis Thompson, and Jerardo Vazquez ³. The families of the victims were present at Tiner’s sentencing and shared their grief and loss ¹.

 

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated, “As a driver, you have an obligation to pay attention to the road. To choose to access social media while driving, placing the lives of others on the line, is reckless” ¹. Tiner’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of distracted driving and the devastating consequences of such reckless behavior.
