Sad Report: Coach Brant Sherwood has been confirmed…

It took all of two days, but the Binghamton Black Bears are reinstating Brant Sherwood as the team’s Head Coach.

UPDATE: As of this Thursday morning, Brant Sherwood’s suspension is fully rescinded and will now just be assessed a $500 fine.

On Wednesday, Black Bears owner Andreas Johansson put out the following statement, reinstating Sherwood as Head Coach:

“The Binghamton Black Bears are pleased to announce that Brant Sherwood has been reinstated as Head Coach effective immediately.

We would like to thank Commissioner Don Kirnan, Director of Player Safety Dave Jackson, and Director of Officiating Paul Jene for working with us on our appeal of the suspension.

Furthermore, I would like to apologize to the FPHL Board of Governors, member organizations, and staff that have been negatively impacted by our previous statement.”

This was in response to the team’s change in leadership from Monday. The Bears moved Tom Reynolds to Head Coach over Sherwood solely because of the Federal Prospects Hockey League’s rule that punishes coaches for player suspensions.

Sherwood was handed a three-game suspension in response to Bryce Ferrell’s seven-game suspension for leaving the bench and trying to fight an “unwilling” opponent this past Saturday. The team put out the following statement on Monday:

“Due to Recent Suspensions and Rule Changes implemented by the FPHL, the Binghamton Black Bears have named Tom Reynolds as Head Coach.

Brant Sherwood will continue with the organization as an Assistant Coach after serving his suspension which our organization will appeal.

With the recent rule changes and unpredictable/inconsistent suspensions being handed out; we felt this is in the best interest of the hockey club.”
