The late Larry Phillips was essential in getting Martin started in the sport and developing him into a winner. “‘The Master,'” Martin stated of Phillips. “Just learning from him. If you wanted to win a race, you had to figure out how to beat Larry Phillips, which was a daunting task. It was a good training place. After graduating from high school, Martin spent the summer in Springfield, working at Phillips’ race shop on Commercial Street.
