SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Legendary NBA player and executive Jerry West has died. The Los Angeles Clippers said he passed away Wednesday morning with his wife, Karen, by his side.

West was such an iconic figure – so much so that a silhouette of him dribbling became the inspiration for the NBA’s current logo and earned him the nickname ‘The Logo.’

On the court, he was known as ‘Mr. Clutch.’ West started his career with the Lakers in 1960. During his 14 years in the league, he was named an All-Star all 14 seasons and led the franchise to 9 NBA Finals.

West went on to coach the Lakers for three seasons before becoming a scout and then joining the front office.

On Wednesday, we spoke with Matt Zeysing, vice president curatorial affairs for the Basketball Hall of Fame, who explained what West meant to him.

“Jerry West was one of my favorite Hall of Famers. His demeanor and his warmth and attitude was amazing and he commanded respect when he walked into a room and I just admire that in a person, not just a basketball player,” Zeysing explained.

Under West’s leadership, the Lakers added the superstar talents of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant.

West was 86 years old.
