The Boston Red Sox have stated unequivocally that they intend to keep developing their core group of young players. Now that righty Brayan Bello has agreed to a six-year, $55 million contract extension, Boston is concentrating on first baseman Triston Casas.
The 2018 Red Sox first-round draft pick is headed into his second full season with the team. The year 2023 saw Casas cut.263/.365/.477 with 65 RBI and 24 home runs. Additionally, Casas placed third in the American League Rookie of the Year competition for 2023.
Extending Casas would be the next logical move for ownership to do in order to demonstrate their willingness to invest in its developing core. Even though he won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2028–2029 season, they should make it a priority to sign homegrown talent as soon as possible to avoid what occurred to All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts in 2022 and former AL MVP Mookie Betts in 2020.
After this year, we’re going to read a little bit better. “I hope to play a full and healthy season so I can help the team win and to give them a better idea of my potential long-term value,” Casas stated. “We just haven’t been able to meet eye to eye on the dollar amounts, but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to [rule out] any type of talks in the future going forward — or even during the season, or next week, or tomorrow.”
