Almost all of the Boston Red Sox’s supporters have been let down after Mookie Betts was traded before the 2020 campaign. In the four seasons that have since followed, the previous mainstay of the American League East has ended in last place three times. The assumption that the team will be aggressive in free agency during the offseason gradually dissipated. Pitcher Brayan Bello recently inked a 55-million dollar agreement with the Red Sox, while Tanner Houck, a hard-thrower, is still awaiting a new deal.
Since 2020, Houck has pitched for the Red Sox as a starter and a reliever, and he seems ready to take on a starting job this year. He stated that although he has discussed a contract extension with the team, the parties are not yet prepared to reach an agreement.
During his four seasons with the Red Sox, Houck has been somewhat effective, but he has struggled with injuries and hasn’t been able to sustain his play. He made 21 starts with the Red Sox in the previous season, going 6–10 with a 5.01 earned run average over a career-high 106.0 innings pitched. Houck gave allowed 104 hits, 41 walks, and 106 strikeouts against batters.
Houck might make 30 to 35 starts if he can maintain his health and play a complete season in the rotation. The Red Sox took the 6-5, 226-pound Houck in the first round of the 2017 draft after he played collegiate baseball at Missouri.
Tanner Houck has demonstrated that he is not scared to push right-handed hitters off the plate by coming inside to them. Additionally, it seems that he is the kind of pitcher that doesn’t seem to panic while facing dangerous scenarios.
