Fort Myers, Florida: For Red Sox reliever John Schreiber, Saturday was just another typical spring training day. Until it wasn’t. By the time the right-hander departed JetBlue Park after the most recent day of pitchers’ and catchers’ drills, he was no longer a member of the Red Sox.
For pitching prospect David Sandlin, the Red Sox sent Schreiber, 30, to Kansas City, nearly three years to the day they grabbed him off waivers from the Tigers. Schreiber’s ordinary day was transformed into one of amazement and teammate hugs.
“It’s a bit of a whirlwind,” Schreiber stated following the transaction. This is my first experience being traded. I’m therefore a little agitated.
On February 18, 2021, Schreiber—a little-known sidearmer with 28 lackluster games under his belt with his hometown Tigers—joined the Red Sox via waivers. In the midst of a COVID crisis, he would only play one game for the Red Sox in 2021. However, in 2022, manager Alex Cora would find him to be a reliable late-inning option. In 65 innings pitched that season, he struck out 74 batters with a 2.22 ERA.
