WVLT DAYTON, TENN. – Deputy Robert “RJ” Leonard, 35, was immediately sought after after his vehicle and himself after it collided with the Hiwassee River late on Wednesday night.

Shortly after the search started, the deputy’s name was made public, but for over two days, no one was able to identify the woman who was sitting in the back seat of the automobile. The identity of Tabitha Smith was eventually verified by the Knox County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Meigs County Sheriff’s Office reports that Smith was taken into custody following Leonard’s response to a disturbance complaint. Leonard, according to officials, made an error of judgment and ended up driving into a river. She was handcuffed in the back seat and could not get out of it when the vehicle hit the water.

People who knew Smith were surprised to learn of her death, and although they still don’t know all the details of her last hours, they are still grieving for a person they had known for a long time.
