In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans were extremely fortunate to select C.J. Stroud, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, with the second overall pick, and Will Anderson Jr., the Defensive Rookie of the Year, with the third overall pick. With only five interceptions in 15 games, Stroud passed for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns while also leading a 3-13-1 squad to an AFC South title and a postseason victory.

As modest as ever, Stroud chimed in, saying that Newton had a terrific rookie campaign as well. To be fair, he achieved exactly that, rushing for 706 yards and 14 more touchdowns and throwing for 4,051 yards and 21 touchdowns. But the Panthers’ record that season was only 6-10. Newton, though, answered back right away, outlining what made Stroud’s 2011 season so exceptional and why it outperformed his own for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
