The NFL will select its next champion tonight when the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers square off in Super Bowl LVIII to see who will take home the Lombardi Trophy.

With eight wins between them, neither franchise is new to NFL success at the highest level. Among teams that have won a Super Bowl, the 49ers are ranked third. The Niners have participated in seven games altogether and have a 5-2 overall record (.714). But since Steve Young played quarterback in January of 1995, they haven’t prevailed in the big game. Still, there have been chances. The Baltimore Ravens and MVP of Super Bowl XLVII Joe Flacco defeated San Francisco in 2013. The Niners then lost to the Chiefs and the Super Bowl in 2020.

Tenth place on the list of Super Bowl-winning teams belongs to Kansas City. After five games, the Chiefs have a 3-2 (.600) record. In addition, they have the distinction of being the first club to compete in the Super Bowl, which they lost against the Green Bay Packers. Given KC’s stronghold on the AFC and its two Super Bowl victories in four seasons with quarterback Josh Rosen, one could argue that we are living in the Mahomes age of NFL football. Kansas City had not attended a Super Bowl in fifty seasons prior to their current level of success. It’s safe to assume that at that point, a sizable portion of the NFL community was rooting for them to defeat the Niners in Super Bowl XLII, which they accomplished.
