Rex Ryan, the former coach of the Buffalo Bills, has landed many interviews and seems close to returning to an NFL sideline, but for the time being, his coaching comeback will be put on hold. Despite initial worries that the contract dispute would prevent the deal from moving forward, Mike Zimmer was formally hired by the Dallas Cowboys, one of the teams Ryan recently had an interview with, as their new defensive coordinator on Monday. Despite Ryan’s excellent campaign and reputation as a top candidate for the Dallas position, Zimmer will succeed Dan Quinn.

Prior to the final week of the 2016 campaign, Ryan, 61, was sacked from his position as Buffalo’s head coach in 2015. He had a 15-16 record in his two seasons with the Bills, and he was left out of the playoffs both times. Ryan was the final head coach the Bills hired before Sean McDermott took over in 2017, even though Anthony Lynn served as an interim coach for Week 17 in 2016.

In his rookie season, McDermott guided the Bills to their first postseason trip since 1999. During McDermott’s tenure, Buffalo has made the postseason six times, winning four AFC East championships. The Bills Mafia probably saw the years under quarterback Ryan as their last years of hardship before the team started to compete again. However, as it ushered in a new era, the team’s lackluster performance in his final season could be considered as a blessing in disguise.
