CRIME Tesseenne manhunt for suspect in deputy’s fatal shooting and another deputy’s injuries

Early on Friday morning, authorities in eastern Tennessee were looking for a man they believe was involved in a shooting that left one sheriff’s officer dead and another injured.

Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong announced on the department’s Facebook page that 42-year-old Kenneth Dehart has warrants issued for him. He is wanted on suspicion of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm following the shooting on Thursday night.

The shooting that took place during a traffic check claimed the life of Deputy Greg McCowan. After taking a gunshot to the leg, a female officer opened fire. Berrong reported that she was receiving treatment at a hospital.

The toughest thing I’ve ever done is this. “We lost a police officer tonight,” a visibly distraught Berrong stated at a press briefing. “I’m deeply sorry for the young man’s passing. I had earlier spoken with his family. I expressed regret for not shielding him.”

According to Berrong, a $10,000 reward has been given.
“We’re going to get this man off the streets of east Tennessee and put him behind bars,” he stated.
The search for Dehart involves several law enforcement organizations; if sighted, the sheriff’s office advised against approaching him.
