Detroit lost four qualifying free agents in the previous offseason: Evan Brown, Mike Hughes, Jamaal Williams, and D.J. Chark. The veteran Chris Board’s departure was not taken into consideration. Detroit added David Montgomery, Emmanuel Moseley, Marvin Jones, Cam Sutton, and Ceedy Duce as qualified free agents. Other NFL owners are becoming increasingly concerned about the San Francisco 49ers’ excessive number of extra draft selections, citing new league regulations that favor organizations that act as a springboard for minority executives and coaches.

As reported by ESPN, “Owners have complained to the league office about the sheer number of compensatory picks the 49ers have received for serving as a pipeline for coaches and executives of color.” San Francisco has lost Robert Saleh to the Jets, Martin Mayhew to the Commanders, Ran Carthon to the Titans, DeMeco Ryans to the Texans, and Mike McDaniel to the Dolphins since the owners adopted the rule.
