The main productive player for the Lions requested a contract termination, explaining…

According to a source who spoke with PFT, Deshea Townsend is joining the Lions as their cornerbacks coach and coordinator of the defensive passing game.

When it came to passing yards allowed last season, Detroit came in 29th.

Townsend, 48, worked as the Jaguars’ defensive backs coach and coordinator of passing plays for the last two seasons. He has one college stop under his belt and has coached for four additional NFL teams.

Townsend played cornerback for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2009; he retired from the game in 2010. The next year, he started working as a coach in Arizona.

Townsend coached cornerbacks for Mississippi State from 2013 to 2015 and as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Cardinals from 2011 to 2012. Prior to moving to Jacksonville, he served as a coach with the Titans (2016–17), Giants (2018), and Bears (2019–21).

Dan Campbell has expanded his coaching team once again.

Reports state that Deshea Townsend will be joining the Detroit Lions as their new passing game coordinator. Townsend most recently worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars as the passing game coordinator and coach of the cornerbacks.

Tanner Engstrand, the offensive coordinator under coordinator Ben Johnson, is not affected by the title of passing game coordinator. Townsend is anticipated to collaborate with Aaron Glenn on defense.

Upon choosing to break ways with their entire defensive staff after the 2023 season, Townsend was released by the Jaguars. In addition to his most recent assignment in Jacksonville, he has coaching experience in the NFL with the Cardinals, Titans, Giants, and Bears.

Additionally, from 2013 to 2015, he served as the cornerbacks coach at Mississippi State for three seasons.

As a former player, Townsend also fits the mold of Detroit’s staff. He played cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 12 of his 13-year NFL career. He was a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Steelers.
