TYLER, Texas (AP) – According to jail records, the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was taken into custody in East Texas on at least one of his three charges of driving under the influence. As the younger Mahomes gets ready to lead his team into the Super Bowl matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, a legal dispute arises.

The bond for 54-year-old Patrick Mahomes Sr. in Tyler was set at $10,000 when he was detained on Saturday night. According to Smith County, Texas, jail records, he was freed on Sunday.

An Associated Press voicemail requesting comment was left unanswered by Mahomes’ lawyer.

His arrest happened a little over a week before his son is set to lead the Chiefs in their Super Bowl rematch against San Francisco in Las Vegas.

During Monday’s Super Bowl media night, the younger Mahomes is probably going to be asked if he thinks his father’s arrest will cause him any trouble. That might be a plot point for the upcoming weekend.

According to Smith County records, Mahomes Sr. was arrested in 2019 on the same misdemeanor and received a 40-day jail sentence.

Pitcher Mahomes Sr. participated in 11 seasons (1992–2003) of Major League Baseball.

In 308 career games (63 starts), the right-hander went 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA while pitching for the Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Rangers, Cubs, and Pirates. He played for the Mets in the 1999 National League Playoffs.

Jackson Mahomes, the quarterback’s brother, had three felony charges against him dropped last month. He was charged with snatching a woman’s neck and kissing her against her will.
