Rangers create a “contract plan” to prevent a transfer to Leeds United.

Rangers have apparently come up with a scheme to block Leeds United getting their hands on one of their key defenders. This month, the Whites have been connected to a transfer for Borna Barisic, a left defender, due to a need of depth on that side of their defense.

Despite being 31 years old, Barisic has become a possible target due in part to his contractual circumstances. The Croatian is out of contract at Ibrox this summer, thrusting Rangers into a difficult choice. If Rangers accept an offer and they can’t arrange a new contract, they must decide whether to sell now or risk losing Barisic for nothing in the summer.

Furthermore, unless a new deal is agreed upon, Barisic will not relinquish his freedom to agree to a pre-contract with any club outside of Scotland. Rangers is reportedly offered the left-back a new contract because they wish to prevent any of those headaches, according to Football Scotland.

In an effort to halt any transfer race in the wake of Leeds and other teams’ alleged interest, it is alleged that the Gers have asked Barisic whether he would consider signing a new contract. Leeds may need to acquire a left-back if they want to compete for automatic promotion. However, a new contract could prevent Leeds from making any moves at all.

Junior Firpo is the only player left for Leeds after Stuart Dallas, who hasn’t played in over 18 months, is still out of the picture. Sam Byram is also capable of playing on that side. Daniel Farke has brought attention to the fact that Byram and Firpo have also experienced injury concerns.
