Chelsea is currently considering purchasing a Real Madrid player for £47 million.

Journalist Simon Phillips claims on his Substack that Ferland Mendy’s name “has been discussed” at Stamford Bridge, indicating that Chelsea is considering left-backs.

The aforementioned follows the Blues’ decision to permit Ian Maatsen to spend the remainder of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Mendy has been at Real Madrid since 2019, arriving from Lyon in a £47m transfer (BBC Sport).
Luke Shaw of Manchester United is another left-back who has been connected to Chelsea.

Mendy is an excellent left-back who possesses the ability to carry the ball well, which is a valuable quality for a full-back in the modern game.

The Frenchman finished two dribbles per league game in his debut season at Real Madrid, ranking him second in the Spanish team’s lineup after Eden Hazard (WhoScored).

However, since then, Mendy has picked up a series of injuries, which is a concern for Chelsea. One of the reasons why the Blues are likely to sign a new left-back is Ben Chilwell’s fitness issues. Like Mendy, the 27-year-old has struggled to stay injury-free.If he could, Chelsea wouldn’t need to bring in another player at left back, as Chilwell is a quality full-back himself.

The England team will be great going forward. In 23 Premier League games last season, he had two goals and two assists and one cross per game, third most on his team (WhoScored).

Not bad for a winger.Whether it’s Chilwell, Mendy or someone else, some Chelsea fans are just hoping that a proper left-back is on the way soon, with centre-back Levi Colwill currently playing there..
